Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)

Responsibilities

  • Radiation Safety Programs: Develop, implement, and enforce radiation safety policies and procedures in accordance with regulations and best practices.
  • Establish a comprehensive radiation safety program that includes training, monitoring, and emergency response protocols.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Maintain necessary permits and licenses for the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment.
  • Risk Assessment: Conduct regular assessments and evaluations of radiation exposure risks in the workplace.
  • Analyze procedures and practices to minimize exposure levels and enhance safety protocols.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Oversee the monitoring of radiation levels and exposure among personnel using dosimetry and other measurement devices.
  • Maintain accurate records of radiation exposure and incident reports, and report findings to relevant authorities.
  • Training and Education: Develop and conduct training programs for staff regarding radiation safety, proper handling of radioactive materials, and emergency procedures.
  • Educate staff on the principles of radiation protection, including time, distance, and shielding.
  • Incident Investigation: Investigate any incidents or accidents involving radiation exposure or contamination, documenting findings and implementing corrective actions as necessary.
  • Recommend improvements to reduce the risk of future incidents.

Qualifications

  • Education: A bachelor’s degree in health physics, radiological sciences, nuclear engineering, or a related field is typically required. Advanced degrees may be preferred.
  • Experience: Relevant experience in radiation safety, health physics, or a related field is essential.
  • Experience in regulatory compliance and risk management in a healthcare or industrial setting is advantageous.
  • Certifications: Certification as a Qualified Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
